Seoul, South Korea Travel on a Budget

Ever wanted to explore Seoul but a bit hesitant because you think everything is expensive? Well, yes, I consider this city as one of the expensive destinations for backpackers like me. For this, I won't be posting a very long narrative; I'll just share with you the breakdown of my total expenses for the benefit of those who plan to do a backpacking adventure in the city on a very limited budget:

If you won't buy ciggies or skip booze sessions then above cost estimate is feasible. It also depends on your country of origin as airfare and other airport taxes plus visa application fees may vary (for Filipinos, visa application is gratis for 1-59 days stay).

  1. Hi :) thank you for sharing this. Can I have your itinerary on your Seoul trip? :) I was really amazed on how you budgeted everything to below 30k. Thank you so much :)

    1. Hi, so sorry for the late reply. I actually don't have an itinerary since I am a spontaneous traveler :) but if you are aware of the free areas to visit (like parks. Yes, parks in Seoul are great!) and attractions with minimal fees (like palaces, heritage places and some museums) you can definitely travel below 30K in Korea :)

      Here are some suggestions:
      - Namsangol Hanok Village
      - Bukchon Hanok Village
      - Children's Grand Park
      - Dalmaji and Eungbong Mountain Parks
      - Namsan Park (but if you opt to go up to N Seoul Tower that's the time you have to pay entrance fee)
      - Gwanghwamun Square
      - Cheonggyecheon Stream
      - Banpo-Hanggang Rainbow Bridge

Palaces (entrance fees are 3K won)
      - changdeukgung
      - Gyeongbukgung
      - Changgyeonggung
      - Deoksugung (as far as I can remember I only paid 1k won for entrance fee)

      - COEX Mall in Gangnam
      - Bonggeunsa Buddhist temple (Gangnam)
      - Bosingak Belfry
      - Olympic Park (Gangnam)
      - a studio tour in KBS (that's in Yeouido)
      - Yeouido Park

  2. Hi, I just want to ask if we Filipinos don't need a visa to visit South Korea? Thank you.

    1. Hi Kristine, we, Filipinos, need to apply for a tourist visa. I did not include any cost here as the visa itself is GRATIS (free) when you apply directly to Korean Embassy (for stay of less than 60 days). Cost may vary depending on your mode of application processing. If you apply visa via an accredited travel agency, of course you have to pay a fee. Mine was company-assisted, and we were charged with an employee rate :)
